When we begin decorating our spaces, whether interior or exterior we like
to first think about what we already have.
Whenever you can pull from places and slightly rearrange the space for a short period of time, it helps the budget significantly! For example, you might have an old wreath with greenery on it that you aren’t using that you can pull from, or even old urns you could use and fill with some greenery like ferns which are always beautiful and classic, no matter what the season!
If there is nothing you can use that you already have, a run to Hobby Lobby
never hurts! It’s always one of our favorites trips. We always find amazing things there! (BONUS- often at 40-50% off! Holla, sales!! Half off artificial vines and greenery, 40% off lanterns, 50% off artificial pumpkins. Yes plz.) These are all great items for fall front porch decor, we like to mix and match real and artificial pumpkins and greenery on our front porches. We often get lucky finding goodies at Home Goods, Kirklands and At Home as well!
Here are some of the items that will come in handy to recreate our look:
- Urns (2)
- Lanterns (4-6)
- Plants like ferns (2-4)
- Pumpkins- as many as possible- real and fake (10-12 is great!)
- Greenery- fake garland works great! (Eucalyptus/Lambs ear)
- Topiaries (2)
- Grapevine or tall twigs
- Fairy lights
- Wreaths or hanging baskets for your front door(s)
- Front door mats
- Maybe a cute sign 😉 “Hello, Fall!” “Welcome, Fall!”
When we search for pumpkins, we love soft colors. Light greens, oranges
When you are on the hunt for pumpkins for your front porch, look specifically for Cinderella or fairytale pumpkins. These are the pumpkins that have a lot of character. They are heirloom pumpkins that are usually flattened and looks like someone squished them down. They are called Cinderella pumpkins because it is rumored that Disney used these pumpkins as inspiration for Cinderella’s coach!
We love these pumpkins! They are whimsical add charming style to any front porch decor!
Layering mats always adds that extra element of depth and warmth to your front porch. We love the buffalo plaid that is out right now with a traditional outdoor rug on top. Twinkling lights wrapped around a topiary or a tower of pumpkins also add an extra elegant touch on a tight budget.
Once you have everything gathered it’s really just about putting it all together.
STEP 1: The first thing you’ll want to do is ‘frame your front door’- we used 2 topiaries that we have had for a hundred years and truth be told should probably be tossed but they keep serving a purpose, so…!! If you don’t have topiaries, buy some or you can use pumpkins stacked in 2 or 3’s on urns, or even good sized ceramic pots! You can dress up your topiaries or pumpkins by loosely wrapping them in grapevine or twigs. We used ribbon to hold together 2 strands.
STEP 2: Take the lanterns, ferns and pumpkins and evenly space along the sides going up to your front door. You want it symmetrical but not a mirror image! If you notice, we have a cabbage on each side, a fern on each side, and 3 pumpkins on each side! We did like the front lanterns being a mirrored image because they are the ‘entrance’ to the porch if you will.
STEP 3: Arrange everything, and rearrange till you like it! We like to angle cabbage and pumpkins so they face out- if you look close, a lot are ‘tipped’ forward.
STEP 4: Put out your door mats and now that your lanterns and pumpkins are arranged, tuck that greenery around the base on pumpkins, kind of flowing out, and add your fairy lights in between everything. Magical, I tell you! (We will cut the garland in pieces- maybe 3-4) (You can always reconnect them again using twist ties if you need, no one will know! We do it all the time!)
Sometimes getting it to where you want is the hardest and most frustrating part. But it takes time.. and patience. Even for “experts”! So- don’t get aggravated! We fuss and mess with it a hundred times just like you will too.
Just know, once you get it right, it’ll be perfect and your front porch will absolutely be ready for it’s photo-op or for your fun fall gathering! Oh, and you can always add (or borrow) a cute puppy as well! 😉 Thanks to our friends, Kiki, and Winnie!
